Doodle Monsters

This post contains the free to view and use pattern for the yellow monster, Tizzel. A PDF containing the patterns for all 3 monsters can be purchased on Ravelry.

My sons are always drawing and doodling. Every so often, one drawing stands out to me and screams “make it real”! These little monsters just tickled my heart in just the right way and needed to become reality. The youngest son instructed me on what colors they were meant to be and gave them names. Tizzel is the yellow fella, Squibby is blue, and Bloopi is red. But my testers mixed it up a bit with color choices and they look great in all colors!

As usual, I used inexpensive off-brand #4 acrylic yarn from local shops here in Japan and my trusty 3.0mm hook. But you can use any yarn and hook you feel most comfortable with. They take a bit of stuffing and some craft felt for embellishments, but no other special materials. There are no special stitches involved and even a beginner can successfully make a doodle monster.

The monsters’ height measurements range between 6.5” (16.5 cm) and 8” (20.5 cm).

Without any further adieu, let’s take a look at Tizzel’s pattern!

Stitches used in American terminology:

MR – magic ring
sc – single crochet
inc – increase (by creating 2 sc stitches together into the same space)
dec –decrease (by joining 2 sc stitches together with a single stitch)
st – stitch
FLO – front loop only (work only in the front loop of the stitch)
BLO – back loop only (work only in the back loop of the stitch)
FO – finish off
[…] – repeat sequence between brackets indicated number of times

*Doodle Monsters are worked in the round and stuff as you go. However, antenna and limbs are optional to stuff. I did not stuff any antenna and limbs on mine.*

*Do not attach felt embellishments until after completely assembling the monster to ensure proper placement.*

Assembly:

Tizzel – yellow monster
The leg on the left (while facing you) is placed just beside the closing round of the body. The leg on the right is sewn at around round 41. The tops of the arms are placed at round 30 of the body, spaced evenly to each side. The top of the eye opening to be sewn will start at round 19, or 3 rounds from the antenna.

Assembling instructions are only suggestions because these are monsters and do not need to be exact to still be cute. My best advice would be to just pin the pieces on where you like them and sew them accordingly.

Mouths and pupils are just acrylic craft felt in sheets that I cut and then needle felted on after the monsters have been sewn together. Please feel free to glue felt, embroider, or embellish the monsters in your favorite style.

Congratulations on your Tizzel Doodle Monster!
