Duck you! (not really)

Before you go any further, this particular design is quite a bit less child friendly than my typical offerings.

If you’re easily offended, turn back now!

Do not proceed!

But if you can get a chuckle from slightly off color humor,

I give you the bird.

Meet “Duck you“.

It’s a close up so you have one last chance to walk away.

No?

OK, what the duck, let’s get into the inspiration for this amigurumi. A plaster middle finger salute duck came across my social media newsfeed and it made me chuckle. So I did a quick search to see if a crochet version existed. It did not. But it’s hilarious! It NEEDS to exist!

And now it does.

My testers flew through making one in such a short time and gave fabulous feedback. One even caught a typo where I had two commas in a row. We were THAT thorough to get perfect results.

To make your own duck you, you’ll need a small skein of white #4 medium worsted weight acrylic yarn, a small amount of #4 orange yarn, and your choice of 4mm beads, safety eyes, or embroidered eyes. I always use a 3.0mm hook when using #4 yarn.

The hardest part of this pattern, and the reason I wouldn’t recommend it for complete beginners, is the fact that the fingers are not just straight sausages, they have sculpting to make the knuckle bends to ensure correct shaping with little to no effort on your part. But to achieve that, it was necessary to use some slip stitch in front loop only sections. I usually turn my hook handle away from me (I’m a typical knife style holder) and hook the front loops like a fish for those difficult to grab ones.

The four fingers are made first and then all crocheted together. Additional shaping with short rows leading into the rest of the body and culminating in the tip of the tail help make this a very low sew project. The thumb, beak, and feet are made separately and are the only parts to sew on.

So, have I convinced you that this is an achievable project for you?
