Ferdinand

Ferdinand is #06 of the 2024 Happy Scrappy Cat Project. He is going to be hosted as a free crochet along in the Hateruma Handmade Community Facebook group. Starting on March 15th, 2024 and continuing until a date to be determined, Ferdinand’s pattern will be available to view and use FREE right here on this page. Scroll down.

Ferdinand is about 8.25″ from toes to the top of his head when worked in #4 medium worsted weight acrylic. He’s sized to be the perfect take-along friend.

Please note, Ferdinand does have color changes on his face. This is not an educational tutorial and it is assumed you know how to do color changes and will be able to follow standard color change written instructions. Conversely, you can skip the color changes and give him a solid color face and he will still be just as cute.

Ferdinand is also available to purchase as an ad-free PDF at anytime at Ravelry.

I used less than 60g skein of the main color #4 medium worsted weight acrylic yarn and a 3.0 mm hook for all cats. Since this is a scrap project, I do not have yarn names or exact amounts to list. However, most of my yarn was purchased at Daiso in Japan.

Gauge is not important but make sure all of your yarn is the same weight.

Stitches used in American terminology:

MR – magic ring
sc – single crochet
ch – chain
inc – increase (by creating 2 sc stitches together into the same space)
dec –decrease (by joining 2 sc stitches together with a single stitch)
sl st – slip stitch
hdc – half double crochet
hdc inc – half double crochet increase (by creating 2 hdc stitches together into the same space)
DC – double crochet
FO – finish off

Pattern is worked in the round and stuff as you go unless otherwise noted.
Close up photos are at the end of pattern to assist in assembly.

After sewing the head to the body, I sewed my arms onto the body at round 32, centered on both sides. The feet are sewn on according to the photo with heels together and toes apart. I used a temporary basting thread to mark the center line to ensure mirrored position of the feet. Attach a sufficient length of purple yarn to the foot and securely sew around where the foot comes into contact with the body. It is not necessary to actually go all the way into the stitches of the body. Catching as many strands of the body and foot yarn as possible will give a secure attachment seam without actually going around an entire sc stitch. The tail is sewn between rounds 10 and 11, centered in the back. The top of the eyes will fall at about round 8 of the head, with about 3 stitches between them. Make sure they are even placed on the corners of the navy blue muzzle. The ears are positioned starting between rounds 4 and 5 on the top of the head set slightly toward the back, lining up with the back edge of the arm as seen from the side. Embroider a suitable nose according to the picture example or according to your own tastes. Wrap the collar around the neck to make sure of a snug fit before sewing the two ends together to form a continuous ring.
