Redford Fox – by Toni Heyl

I have been wanting to make a fox amigurumi to add to my sons’ personal collection for some time now. None of the existing patterns I was finding appealed to me and I wasn’t in the mood to design my own. But then an opportunity to test a new pattern came along, and it was one that actually appealed to me! I would like to introduce you to Redford Fox by the talented Toni Heyl.

Nine pieces. Yep. Just 9 little pieces to give you a wonderfully sweet little Redford of your own. Not bad, huh?

This pattern, while super easy, did introduce me to something I had never done before. There is an attached flap (you make it as you go before finishing off the orange color) for giving a colored panel to the top of the muzzle. I found it a really nice way to add that dimension without having to do color changes while working in the round. I do admit that I had to give my piece a good tug to get it sewn where it needed to be though. Darn my super tight tension! It was totally a “me” problem and no problem of the pattern.

I never use safety eyes. It’s just a personal preference because I often gift or sell my makes because of space restrictions at home. Even if an older child is receiving one of my toys, I can never be sure a younger child won’t have access to it. Better to err on the side of caution. Having said that, the pattern kind of left it up to us how we wanted to do the eyes. I crocheted 6 single crochets in a magic ring and sewed it in place.

The copy of the pattern we were given to test didn’t have instructions for assembly. It’s pretty easy to see by the images approximately where to attach the pieces though. But I think I attached my legs a bit too close together compared to how Toni did hers. And I curved my ears a bit when sewing them on while I think the official Redford has his ears sewn in line with a round of his head. I do not know if assembly instructions have been added to the pattern PDF so I can’t advise on that at all.

UPDATE: I did receive a copy with the final revisions and it does now have assembly instructions so you can place the pieces exactly where Toni placed hers.

Bottom line? This is a really great pattern that I believe is very suitable for even a beginner. Everyone in our test group had the same results. All of our Redfords looked the same despite us all using different yarns. You really can be confident that you can nail this one!
