How do purchases work here?
Edit: All crochet patterns have been moved to Ravelry because the purchasing app was sending the PDFs to junk folders and allowing people to purchase more than once accidentally. I did not want to be responsible for making people unhappy so I am relying on the trusted system Ravelry uses. I am in Japan and it is not an approved country for an Etsy shop, so I will not be selling on Etsy. If you need an alternate way to make a purchase or leave a “tip”, I can be contacted easily trough Facebook Messenger on my Hateruma Handmade page.

Hello friend, and welcome to my little slice of heaven. I’m Jen Hateruma (it’s a Japanese name pronounced “ha-teh-roo-mah”) and in between taking care of my 2 young sons and husband here in Tokyo, I spend my time creating. I suppose most of my own designs are fairly universal but some of them definitely reflect my own very mixed European heritage as well as my husband’s Japanese heritage. I also tend to lean toward educational or developmental toys as well as literary characters. I also recommend our family’s favorite books that go along with those characters. My husband and I both have teaching degrees (he currently teaches in public school while I’m a stay-at-home-mom) so we REALLY love books in our home.

I truly do love making my own designs to share with others. It brings me joy to know that something I made can be enjoyed by people outside my own home, oftentimes on the opposite side of the planet! I’m thrilled by the thought that you might use one of my designs to create a cherished heirloom for your own family.

You will also notice quite a few designs inspired by my son Kenji’s artworks (and some from little brother Jouji as the blog grows). Ever since I can remember, he has been saying he wants to grow up to be a toy designer. I’m doing my best to nurture that dream. AND whenever someone purchases a Kenji design pattern, he gets 100% of the money to put toward his art supplies. (Yeah, we don’t sell enough to even keep the kid fully supplied with sketch paper yet).

I also enjoy experiencing the designs of others. I share reviews of some of my favorite designs I have stumbled across, mostly free. I will never recommend a pattern I haven’t tried successfully myself. I also don’t even know these other designers or benefit in any way by recommending them to you. I simply enjoyed the design and as a little way of saying thanks to the designer I will provide a link for you to go check it out too.

Just in case you’re asking, “But Jen, why are you giving me a link to go hunt down these free patterns you’re recommending instead of just sharing it here?” Well, because I don’t own that pattern. It’s not mine to post. Sharing the pattern here would be theft. Also, because when we designers offer our own patterns for free, the only income we might possibly make is a little bit of compensation from advertisers and affiliates when one or two of the hundreds of people visiting our sites actually clicks on something. Smaller designers might barely make enough to cover their web hosting expenses.

I really want to thank you for taking the time to visit me here! I welcome any and all feedback so I can continue to develop this site into something really special that creative people everywhere can enjoy.
